Each year in December the Society runs a “Spirit of Christmas” concert in conjunction with choirs from the local primary and secondary schools. One of the highlights in this is always the announcement of the winners and the singing of the winning carols submitted for the Carol Competition.
Children from two age groups (years 1 to 6 and 7 to 13) in the local schools are encouraged to enter and the standard of composition and, in a number submissions, the harmonisation, is consistently very high.
The winners and runners-up in each section receive show tickets and gift vouchers and a recording of their carol made by the Society.
In 2011 the junior runners-up were Niamh and Eve from St Thomas More RC Primary School with “Good Old Donkey” and the junior winners Ekaterina and Madeleine from the same school with “In God’s Eyes”. The senior winners were Alice and Hannah from Saffron Walden County High School whose carol was entitled“Mary’s Little Boy”.
As an added bonus, on 4 December 2011, the carol recordings were broadcast on Suzie Roberts’ “Sunday Breakfast” on BBC Radio Cambridge.
