Every year SWCS runs a Carol Competition where we invite young composers from all our local schools, both primary and secondary, to write their own music for a carol in whatever style they choose, which can then be put forward into the competition.
IN 2020 the Spirit of Christmas is going to be a virtual event but the carol competition is still going ahead, and this year we have three categories:
Junior : One or two composers | Uo to year 6 | Write your own words. Compose your own tune Optional: include ideas for chords or accompaniment |
Senior : One or two composers | Years 7 to 13 | Write your own words OR use existing words (NB – If the writer of these is alive or died after 1950 you will need written permission from the copyright holder) Compose your own tune Either Add an instrumental accompaniment Or Score the whole piece for 4-pt Mixed voice choir – SATB (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) |
Mixed Age : Two composers | One junior and one senior | As Senior |

With the current uncertainties over professional live performances in the pandemic, all the prizes this year will take the form of vouchers, along with a recorded performance for the main prizewinners.
Individual entries from young composers who live in the Saffron Walden district are very welcome.
