Belshazzar’s Feast with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Marin Alsop

Sunday 10th November 2019 at 7:30pm
Saffron Hall, Saffron Walden

This will be the LPO’s second concert as Resident Orchestra of Saffron Hall, where they will perform under the baton of Marin Alsop and with Roderick Williams as soloist. We are thrilled to be the guest chorus for this starry line-up, singing in William Walton’s colourful Belshazzar’s Feast. The rest of the all-English programme has a more pastoral English flavour (Butterworth’s A Shropshire Lad and Elgar’s Enigma Variations), but in Belshazzar’s Feast we are transported directly to the searing heat of ancient Babylon. Walton equips us with an enormous orchestra, double choir, a baritone soloist, an organ, and an artillery of percussion including a whip and an anvil, and so the scene is set for a blasphemous king to get his comeuppance.
