Saffron Walden Choral Society’s next concert offers a truly life-affirming programme.
There Was a Child is an intensely moving modern masterpiece by Jonathan Dove, commissioned to celebrate the life of a young man who drowned aged only 19. Dove’s nine movements explore birth, aspects of childhood and growing independence, as well as loss, setting texts by Wordsworth, Keats, Tennyson, Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman to celebrate the powerful impact his short life had on all those around him. Whilst poignant it is also a joyful and mischievous work.
SWCS’s acclaimed youth choir, SignuptoSing, along with Thaxted Primary School choir, will perform with the main choir adding the ‘essence’ of childhood.
Francis Poulenc’s spacious and monumental Gloria is one of the greatest sacred works of the twentieth century and is fully deserving of its immense popularity. This exceptionally melodious work partners the Dove perfectly.
Under the inspired musical direction of conductor Janet Wheeler, the combined choirs will be accompanied by the Chameleon Arts Orchestra at its most imposing with extended percussion, woodwind and brass sections and the addition of a harp.
Please note that Poulenc's Gloria will be the first item on the programme.
Saffron Hall Special Family Ticket Price: Families can buy two adults plus two under-eighteen tickets for £28 - a discount of up to £16.
