About Saffron Walden Choral Society

A dynamic, highly accomplished choir

Saffron Walden Choral Society is renowned for its innovative programming and polished performances. It has a strong reputation for performing major choral works to a high standard, collaborating frequently with professional orchestras and soloists. The choir has a distinguished history - founded in 1883, it is one of the oldest choral societies in the UK. Its approximately 120 singers are drawn from a wide geographical area encompassing Essex, Hertfordshire, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.

Under the direction of its Musical Director, Quintin Beer, the Choral Society performs regularly at the world-class Saffron Hall, sharing the stage with prestigious ensembles that have included the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Britten Sinfonia. The choir delivers a challenging and diverse repertoire ranging from Renaissance and Baroque favourites to compositions from exciting contemporary composers such as Jonathan Dove and Cecilia McDowell. Works composed specifically for the Choral Society include The Ceaseless Round of Circling Planets by the choir's former MD Janet Wheeler (with a world première at Thaxted Festival in 2016) and Sing Joyfully by acclaimed baritone and composer Roderick Williams (performed at the choir's 140th Anniversary concert in 2023).

The Choral Society is also committed to community engagement, fostering close links with local schools and sharing concerts. This includes its annual Spirit of Christmas events that involve hundreds of children. The choir's dedication to musical excellence and community outreach makes it a cornerstone of the regional cultural scene.
